Closet Island Dimensions

Island ~24–36 in deep; 36 in clear on working sides

A closet island commonly runs 24 to 36 inches deep and needs roughly 36 inches of clearance on every side that has drawers, which is why islands typically need a closet at least 10 feet wide.

Why this number

  • Island depth plus clearance on both sides plus wall storage adds up quickly: 24 (wall) + 36 + 30 (island) + 36 + 24 (wall) = 150 inches, or 12.5 feet.
  • Island height is often matched to counter height, around 36 inches, so the top works as a folding or packing surface.
  • If clearance cannot be met, a peninsula or a bench gives some of the benefit.

Typical island dimensions

  • Depth: 24–36 inches
  • Length: whatever the room allows after clearances; 48 inches is a practical minimum for a drawer bank
  • Height: often about 36 inches, matching counter height
  • Clearance: about 36 inches on every side with drawers

The room it needs

Wall storage (24) + clearance (36) + island (24–36) + clearance (36) + wall storage (24) comes to roughly 12–12.5 feet for a two-sided island between two storage walls. A one-sided island can sit closer to a shelving wall. Below about 10 feet, plan a bench or tower instead; see closet island: pros and cons.

Test it

Enter your room into the space planner; if the walkway between side storage is under about 96 inches, a two-sided island does not fit.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a closet island need?

About 36 inches of clearance on each working side plus the island's own depth — commonly a room 10–12.5 feet wide.

How tall is a closet island?

Often about 36 inches, matching counter height.

What if my closet is too narrow for an island?

A drawer tower on the end wall and a bench give most of the function.
