How High Should Closet Rods Be?

A single rod is commonly set between 66 and 72 inches off the floor, which suits shirts, jackets and folded pants while leaving usable floor or shelf space below.

Why this number
- Most shirts and jackets hang about 36 to 40 inches; a rod at 66 to 72 inches leaves clearance for a shelf or shoes underneath.
- Dresses and long coats need 60 to 66 inches of clear drop, so a long-hang rod is placed at the same height but nothing is built beneath it.
- Rod height should follow the tallest user's comfortable reach; taller rods waste the bottom of the closet for shorter users.
Three rod heights
- Single hang: commonly 66–72 inches, for shirts, jackets and folded pants with shelf or shoe space below.
- Long hang: the same height with the floor clear beneath, for dresses and coats needing 60–66 inches of drop.
- Double hang: upper rod around 80–84 inches and lower around 40–42 inches in an 8-foot closet.
Set it to the person
A rod at 84 inches is a stretch for many adults. Set the upper rod to the tallest comfortable reach of the person who uses the section; a pull-down rod solves it where two people share a closet. For accessible design, the ADA Standards' forward reach range (15–48 inches) is a useful reference even though private homes are generally not covered.
Ceiling height
Below about 7.5 feet, double hang shortens and some garments stop fitting; above 9 feet, the extra goes to a taller top shelf, not a third rod. See single hang vs double hang.
