Walk-In Closet Dimensions and Walkway Clearance
36 in minimum walkway (24 in storage depth each side)
A common design guideline keeps at least 36 inches of clear walkway between facing storage walls, which means a two-sided walk-in wants about 7 feet of width.

Why this number
- Hanging storage is about 24 inches deep; with storage on two facing walls, 24 + 36 + 24 = 84 inches, or 7 feet.
- A 36-inch walkway lets one person stand, turn and open drawers; 42 inches is more comfortable if drawers face the walkway.
- This is design practice, not a building code. Accessibility standards for public accommodations use different, specific clearances.
Minimum widths by layout
| Layout | Arithmetic | Practical minimum width |
|---|---|---|
| One wall of storage | 24 + 36 | About 5 ft |
| Two facing walls | 24 + 36 + 24 | About 7 ft |
| U-shape (three walls) | Same as two facing, plus depth for the end wall | About 7 ft wide × 7 ft deep |
| Two walls + island | 24 + 36 + 30 + 36 + 24 | About 12.5 ft |
These are common design guidelines. A 36-inch walkway lets one person stand, turn and open a drawer; 42 inches is more comfortable where drawers face the walkway.
Check your room
The space planner applies these numbers to your width and depth and drops a storage wall when the walkway would fall below 36 inches. Then read how to design a walk-in closet and, if the room is wide, closet island: pros and cons.
Door and window
The door swing and any window take a wall segment out of play. In-swinging doors need their arc clear; out-swinging or pocket doors give the wall back.
