How Deep Should Closet Shelves Be?

Shelves for folded clothing are commonly 12 to 14 inches deep; shelves above hanging sections are often 16 inches so they align with the hanging depth below.

Why this number
- A folded shirt or sweater is roughly 10 to 12 inches wide, so a 12 to 14 inch shelf holds a stack without overhang while keeping the back reachable.
- Deeper shelves (16 inches and up) hide items at the back and encourage double stacking; use them for bins, luggage or above hanging rods.

Why 12 to 14 inches
A folded shirt or sweater is roughly 10–12 inches across. A 12–14 inch shelf holds a stack flush with the front and leaves the back reachable. Go to 18 or 20 inches and the back third becomes a place things go to be forgotten, or a second row forms and hides the first.
When deeper is right
- Above hanging sections, 16 inches aligns the shelf with the hanging depth so the section reads as one plane.
- The top shelf, for bins and luggage — deep is fine because you lift things out rather than reach in.
- Pantry bottom shelves with roll-outs, where the tray brings the back to you.
When shallower is right
- Shoe shelves: 12–14 inches, sometimes 12.
- Pantry eye-level shelves: 10–14 inches so cans sit one row deep.
- Display shelves for bags or hats.
Adjustability
