Double-Hang Rod Spacing

Upper rod ~80–84 in; lower rod ~40–42 in

Double hang stacks two rods: an upper rod around 80 to 84 inches and a lower rod around 40 to 42 inches, each giving roughly 38 to 40 inches of drop for shirts, jackets and folded pants.

Why this number

  • Two rods roughly double hanging capacity in the same width, which is why reach-in closets benefit most.
  • Ceiling height matters: an 8-foot ceiling supports 84/42; lower ceilings push the upper rod down and shorten both drops.
  • Items longer than about 38 inches (dresses, long coats, many pants hung by the cuff) do not fit and need a single or long-hang section.

What fits

Each tier gives about 38–40 inches of drop in an 8-foot closet: shirts, blouses, jackets, blazers and pants folded over a hanger. Dresses, coats and pants hung by the cuff need single or long hang. See single hang vs double hang.

Below about 7.5 feet both tiers shorten; some garments stop fitting. Measure the longest short-hang garment before committing.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart are double-hang rods?

Commonly about 40–42 inches between rods, with the upper rod around 80–84 inches in an 8-foot closet.

Does double hang work with 8-foot ceilings?

Yes; that is the standard case.

What if my ceiling is lower?

Both tiers shorten; check the longest garment fits.
